Teaching Starts at Home

Dad Doing Homework with Both Sons

Helping your child with special needs is both a gift and a challenge. Doing activities at home with your child that emphasize problem solving skills is important. Remember, you are not going to “cure” your child, but you should give them every opportunity to help themselves. They will learn some of there most valuable skills about hard work, social interaction and self-awareness. Children may not perceive everything, but they are often very aware of their surroundings and safety, especially in a learning environment. You can start at a very young age, as early intervention is often the key to long-term success for children with disabilities. Continuing to support your child as they work their way through the education system is critical, and both you and your child should learn advocacy skills for their present and future.

Many of the children in the schools simply lived there because states ran out of options for where else to place them. The…

The ideal special education teacher should be well equipped with endless patience. Working toward goals is challenging for students, and special education teachers need to always be ready to face those challenges with their students. Another key for the special education teacher is the ability to connect with colleagues in a variety of settings. Teachers may join a co-taught classroom, invite other service providers into small group settings or be willing to lead a group in learning more about a student and their disability. All in all, it takes a very special person to fill the role of becoming a special education teacher. Those who rise to the challenge are often self-motivated, caring individuals who…
